Now and then someone comes up with a combination of technologies that really works. Voltaic Systems' clever marriage of well-engineered bags and intelligent solar charging technology is one of these combinations. Thought-out down to the tiniest detail, Voltaic bags will charge your phones, cameras, and ipods. The largest model, the Generator, will even charge your laptop.

All Voltaic bags use their tough, flexible solar panels to charge a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. To charge your electronic items you plug them in to the battery's voltage-regulated interface. This insures that your electronic devices can't be harmed by inappropriate voltages or overcharging. The bags come with a total of eleven adaptors that will allow you to charge most any device. If your device isn't in the list below, additional adaptors are available.

You'll find that the engineers at Voltaic are serious about making their bags extremely useful. Unlike many competing brands, the bags themselves are designed for their purpose - the bags feature clever cable-routing channels that lead to device-sized pockets, a discrete battery compartment, high-density foam padding in strategic areas, heavy-duty zippers and real Fastek click-locks. The bags are made from a tough fabric engineered by Voltaic that is woven from recycled polyethylene bottles - part of an environmental commitment that sets Voltaic apart in the industry. The award-wining fabric is extremely durable, lightweight, and repels water. The waterproof solar components are made to take a beating as well - we tried to break the solar panels by backing into walls while wearing one of the backpacks, dropping heavy objects on them, and even jumping up and down on them without inflicting any damage.

The Converter is Voltaic's most versatile solar charger. It is a small, lightweight day bag with a compartment for a water bladder, so it is ideal for biking and hiking. It can be worn as a backpack or as a sling bag.

Multiple attachment mechanisms (removable Fasek buckles at each corner to loop through anchor points and MOLLE compatible PALS for attachment to military packs) mean it can work as a pannier on a bicycle, a tank bag on a motorcycle, a saddle pack, or a day bag attached to a larger rucksack.

The Voltaic Converter features a compact 10 litres of well-organized space and a 3-cell, 4-watt charging system with a built-in Lithium-ion battery to store power for when you need it. The bag includes a fully padded laptop sleeve for up to a 17" laptop (42cm x 28cm x 7cm) and cable routing channels for charging cameras, gps units, and other electronics throughout the bag. The design allows the semi-rigid solar panels protect items inside the bag. High density padding in the shoulder straps and back and mesh backing material for better air flow make for a comfortable experience even when the bag is fully loaded.

Electronics:

Like the Backpack and Messenger, the Voltaic Converter produces 4 watts of solar power from three tough, lightweight, waterproof solar panels. 4-6 hours of direct sunlight produce enough power to fully charge a typical cell phone. When not in the sun, the battery can be charged using the AC travel charger or DC car charger making it just as useful on the grid as off. The bag comes with 11 standard adaptors for easy connections to common cell phones and universal plugs. it also includes a car charger socket and USB adaptor so you can always use a standard charger for your device. An indicator light sewn inside the logo on the outside of the bag shows when the panels are generating power.

Battery Pack:

The battery pack, which clips into a special pocket inside the bag, can be recharged using the solar panels in the bag, the included AC travel charger, or the car charger. With the adaptors, it a universal charger for both the city and outdoors. You can transfer power stored in the battery pack to your device whenever you need it. A voltage converter switch on top of the battery pack allows you to adjust the power output to suit the device being charged, 3.5, 5, or 7.2 Volts. Virtually all cell phones, most PDA's, and USB chargers run at 5V. The 7.2V setting is useful for devices like larger digital cameras and iPods, or when using a car charger. The battery pack can be removed from the bag for use separately.

In another example of Voltaic's engineers practicality, the battery pack doubles as a super-bright LED torch that lasts 55 hours on a charge.

Solar panels:

The solar panels are waterproof, scratch resistant, and UV resistant. They use a high efficiency monocrystalline cell. The three panels operate independently to generate up to 4 watts of power. This is double the power of typical solar chargers and enough to charge most portable consumer electronics (other than laptop computers - to charge a laptop you need the Generator bag). The substrate is an aluminum / plastic composite, specifically designed to be strong and lightweight. They can easily stand up to typical outdoor use including being dropped and leaned on. The panels are mounted in a flexible fabric sleeve. They articulate with the bag, which means it doesn't feel rigid or restrictive. Even if you manage to break one, which would probably take a conscious effort, they can easily be removed and replaced.
